Flash Friday #27: Once More, With Feeling

For Mature Audiences Only

Much has been said about last night’s presidential debate, the last of three. People and media outlets are widely disagreeing on which candidate won. Those who like Obama thought he came across as cool and presidential, those who favor McCain thought he sounded tough and armed with facts. Other media outlets have decided Madonna’s divorce won the debate. Or, most interestingly, some plumber from Ohio.

We at meZine find debates to be dull and a little too “issue”-y for our tastes. We prefer debates rife with brooding stares and pregnant, meaningful silences. And sometimes, if done artistically, we don’t mind violence, but only in the way that symbolizes peace. We thought the debate last night was a little obvious, quite frankly. We like our arguments to lie buried in the subtext, bloated with irony. And what, no berets?

You can imagine our delight - our existential delight, of course - when we discovered HBO was airing the debates. Finally, a debate that lets us know what is really real as they show us the unreal reality of the surreal. Though you, dear meZiner, will never see the actual HBO debate, we can tell you it was like Kafka playing the violin while writing a poem as the sun slips under the skirts of the earth.

Don’t just take our word for it, here is the recap:

Was There Too Much Sex And Profanity In The HBO Presidential Debate?

  1. Fantastic. TGIFF.

Hey, I know there are some Guided By Voices fans in here. Robert Pollard’s new band Boston Spaceships is great. And the album Brown Submarine is pure genius. Pick it up today. Thank me tomorrow.

  2. Holy crap, I just listened to Winston’s Atomic Bird. I had no idea how much Slycee Jenkins had been inspired by the GBV sound. SJ totally could have written and performed that song.

  3. Yes. And I think Slycee often performed GBV songs better than GBV. I am an Scientist, Salty Salute. Oh yeah.

  4. Carl and I saw BS last week. Fantastic live show. The album really has grown on me, too. Gets better every listen.
